Fall can be an adjustment in terms of color, at least for me. After the initial burst from the falling leaves the barren landscape can get a little drab. So I like to counteract this by sticking out like a sore thumb and piling on a blinding amount of color and mixing prints. To each her own, right? It feels good!

Back in April, in-house designers Jamie and the Jones secured the emerging designer slot in this years nD Festival fashion show! After months of planning, sewing, and adding the millions of final details that they've become known for, the two unveiled their newest collection at the festival's finale last week. I have yet to see the full collection in images, but the short film below by Kristin Barlowe is such a compelling portrayal of their aesthetic you don't need much else. Congratulations to Jamie and Hannah for the much deserved recognition and hats off for knocking it out of the park!

I'm realizing the LH birthday is starting to have a similar effect on my mind that my own birthday does. Great. Years passing this quickly is weird! Each summer, just like clockwork, the music festivals come and hoards of wild-haired touristas flock across the country to see their favorite bands, get sunburns, and pay $5 for bottled water. In our neck of the woods the destination is Manchester, TN and Bonnarroo. For Local Honey this is always a tornadic, yet awesome, time because along with all of the thru traffic jetting around town for quick shopping come the performers... the people you just never really dream are going to walk through the doors and start raving over the tops and dresses your friends sat and stitched right next to you while you cracked jokes and discussed brilliant ideas for TV commercials. But, as I've just been reminded, it happens. Every year! This time around it was the lovely, tremendous, and sickeningly cool Florence Welch and her drug of choice was the hand-marbled silk handy work of in-house produced line Jamie and the Jones. Of course, I think there were few things in the store left untouched by her and her gang, but her biggest reaction came from the last thing she put on the pile... a gorgeous, golden silk chevroned J&J maxi dress, which she made it very clear to me would be THE thing to wear for the festival press shots. Sweet!

Now, after the TO and FRO traffic has come and gone, we can add Miss Welch to the LH list of wow clientele alongside Zoe Deschanel, Kim Gordon, and Debbie Harry. Not bad yall.

Since moving to our Belmont home there has been SO MUCH going on and so much change in so many forms. It's awesome. The most unexpected of which might end up being my waistline, due to the fact that I've consumed more bacon and coffee from Bongo Java in the past 2 months than I did in all of 2010, but the BIGGEST change by far is our rapidly growing crew of interns! We're busting at the seams! They bring so much enthusiasm, style, and talent to the family and the tally is now up to 6. As of this week our newest lovey Treona will join the family alongside Corey, Nina, Grace, Julie, and Megan. So I thought I'd pay a little homage because having them has been a joy! Even though each has their respective dedication... Corey Michael and Nina Coppin to T&P, Julie Gross to Jamie and the Jones, and Grace Hargroder, Megan Wilson, and Treona Hunter to Local Honey and WHITE RABBIT... they are all loved and adored by everyone in the house and bring their own bit of flair to the store. Check out these babes! Right?! I am so lame for doing this. I feel like a mom.

People LOVE art is more like it! Shannon Lea's line People Like Art is popping up in editorial after editorial. Since launching last Fall, this line of hand-painted tops and dresses has been collecting fan after fan and flying off the racks. This is basically how it goes with everyone... customer: "These are awesome." me: "I know right?"

After a first series inspired by elementary school art, she has now begun producing series 2 based on Cubism. However, due to popular demand, literally people are emailing requests, the first series arrow prints (as shown in the lower picture above) will be sticking around for the summer! Stop by the shop and check em out!

So now that Nashville Fashion Week has come and gone, I finally have a moment to sit and share how HUGE it was. If you were keeping up with all of the press... you know there were a tremendous amount of events, shows, and hours spent by everyone involved. From here at Local Honey, it was beyond. With only 5 emerging local designers securing spots on the runway... having 2 of them come from our family of designers and also create the collections right here at 2009 Belmont really brought the experience to a whole new level. It seems every time I turn around there's another article or blogger recognizing Local Honey's contribution to Nashville fashion, but all of the press from the Scene and the Tennessean that circulated during and after Nashville Fashion Week was some of the best! I feel so thankful! Talk about breaking in our new studio! Hannah Jones, Jamie Frazier, and myself racked up the hours one after another until we lost count. Sewing round the clock for weeks produced what turned out to be our best work to date and so many inside jokes we're likely to sound crazy to anyone who comes around for a while. I already knew how lucky I was to have these girls moving in at LH, but I never foresaw this family bond. It's incredible. Now that the smoke has cleared we're getting back to our routines and waiting for the official photos to be released. WHOA. Hoping this won't take much longer! For now, here are just a couple of snap shots from Nashville bloggers who were in attendance. My absolute favorite pic of the J&J girls just before they debuted on opening night at the Pinnacle and a shot from my WR show at the RAD church. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported us and to the coordinators for all of their hard work. What a week!

A few weeks back UNDER THE GUISE did a feature on the new LH location that I really liked and after perusing a well curated collection of Nashville street style images on the site, I wanted to send a little love back her way. This is something to appreciate. As a street style documenter myself, I know just how diligent you have to be to do it... stopping people on the street and in venues, and taking time out of your dinners, errands, and hangs to snap a pic of each ensemble that possesses an extra little bit of witchery. It takes dedication. So it's refreshing to see someone who is clearly in the zone and her eye is ON. Not to mention the pics are beautifully composed. Hats off.

After what feels like a year of time passed, today I'll start settling back into a "normal" routine. Relocating the shop over the course of the past 4 months and the workload that entailed was completely consuming. I lost sleep, lost weight, and barely had time to think about anything else. So I was only spending time on the internet on a need-to basis and the blog has been a little abused. This will be my attempt to get it up to speed!

Once I had been officially chewed up and spit out by the mental strain of getting together a solid plan during October and November, I was ready to begin the actual physical labor of the move. At the first of December I began transforming the new building and making a new home for the store... painting each room top to bottom, replacing, scraping, cleaning, and planning. A lot of 12-hour days. I worked so much for so many consecutive days that I felt crazed. Like maybe how you feel when you're on the verge of death? But just like clockwork the January grand opening came... with more than 200 friends and dozens of pleasant conversations about new plans and projects. It was great! Then I had a moment to breathe a little. Just to sit down the following week and do a regular days work was so relaxing. I spent a few days doing the books and emailing. I chipped away at a pile of work that had been neglected and attempted to regain some sort of familiar life. However, there was one more pretty huge hurdle before putting my feet up... a week in Central America to be exact! In December, amidst a tornado of work, I had secured a job as a tailor on a photo shoot in Costa Rica. At first it seemed a bit of a farce to consider jetting away to a tropical destination. I was sure I'd be exhausted and leaving town while not being settled at the shop would DEFINITELY stress me out. But honestly, the timing wasn't totally terrible... so I figured it couldn't hurt to apply for the position. When opportunities like this one come along you go for it. Well, I got hired! So my leisure days of tying up loose ends and nesting were numbered and soon to be replaced by sunny days in a treehouse community in the jungle. What?

Now, after flying home not one but TWO weeks later, I'm trying to make sense of this maniacal life I've had for the past 4 months. Holy cow! I can't even explain how my brain feels and I have to attempt a smooth transition back into my day to day juggling! My 12-step program back to mental health will include, but not be limited to: making the most inclusive and stupidly long to-do list in the world, committing to a nourishing diet and getting my rest, catching up with my friends and my city, settling in to this big beautiful new house! and last, but certainly most important, I need to purge creatively. I've got a serious clog in my right brain and although that sounds really stylish... I intend to work it out post haste. Here goes Spring!

The Linden house was oh so good to us. As I emptied the contents of the shop a box at a time, the memories were abundant. Even though I had seen the same blank walls before, they looked completely different- barely worse for ware considering the million good times. I wish I had more pics, like some of the night we all got snowed in with Sisters and Emily Hines had a huge black eye... I lost a ton when my old computer died, but I still had some good ones.

As Local Honey enters into its last month of residence at the Linden Avenue house I'm becoming more than a little sentimental. For those of you who haven't heard yet... the house we have loved for the past 4 years and filled with countless amazing memories, has been sold and I'm relocating the shop to a new home. Though it's sad to leave, this is an incredibly exciting thing! I am very optimistically looking onward and working mondo endurecido. Given the time constraint there has been a lot to do. The past 2 months have been a whirlwind of planning, debating, negotiating, organizing, barely sleeping some nights, and typing my tiny fingers off. But after what felt like the mental equivalent to birthing a yeti... I signed on the line and made it official! Local Honey will take residence at 2009 Belmont Blvd. the first week of January 2011!

Now, this location is BIG. Not only is LH setting up shop, but also menswear aficionados Tidwell and Perryman, an atelier for White Rabbit and Jamie and the Jones, and a sewing school run by Alexia Abegg offering beginning to advanced classes in sewing, drafting, and quilting. The store will boast more stock than ever in a spacious, polished new home and become a more tenacious purveyor of local designer garments and accessories. I'm beyond thrilled. Until then, we are still open for business at the Linden house through the end of the year and holiday shopping is in full swing! We will be hosting this years Christmas Soiree on December 17th and packing the shop with tons of locally made goodies and vintage giftables. So stay tuned for more details on the party and help us send 1207 Linden off proper.

With Venus in retrograde, and the onset of legitimately cold weather, I don't feel like doing anything in my free time other than catching movies, pondering art, or staring at the wall. Fortunately there have been a slew of worthy diversions that fall into these parameters and aren't viewable from my couch, so I'm not wasting away in utter vacuousness. In the past few weeks I've seen a Basquiat doc, a Dennis Hopper doc, a Ginsberg biopic, the pretty stupendous Enter The Void, and a John Lennon biopic. Not a bad run. Now, local artist Shane Doling has an exhibition up at Twist Gallery that I'll be making my way down to see this weekend. If you're in Nashville, you should do the same. More info HERE.

Procured my newest issue of NYLON today, and though not usually a noteworthy event as I've had a subscription since year two and probably still have the very first issue stashed somewhere in my ridiculous mountain of saved magazines, this particular copy is special! During their recent cross-country cool hunt, associate editor Rebecca Davis and crew stopped in Nashville to sink their teeth into what makes our city hop- and I gotta say, they did their homework! Not only did they request an interview with moi about a week before they arrived, but by the time they got here they had contacted enough of my friends and done enough digging to send everyone into a tizzy. My phone was vibrating to death! What they put together might very well have been the exact collection of Nashville people I would have chosen to feature and I've lived here 11 years! So, hats off to NYLON, super pumped, and thanks to my amazing circle of vibrant, talented friends for the overwhelming love.

It's been a little while since the Local Honey birthday party. It took me more than 2 months to get my hands on the fashion show pics since the Scene was holding on to them to include in the 2010 Fashion Issue. For those of you who weren't there... it was REALLY a fun show! SO HOT OUT and the yard was packed arm to arm, but not a complaint to be heard once the underwear clad models started walking down the runway. The goal was to present a show as unconventional as our style. We went with a concept based on the all too familiar process of getting dressed... one piece at a time. I wish there was a video, but the pics are a nice documentation.

Last month, in preparation for my Fall collection, I began the first in a series of custom fabric treatments I plan to integrate into my looks over the course of the next several months, involving various chemicals, dyes, weaving, and sewing techniques. In correlation with my color scheme it made sense to start with a bleach treatment on black cotton, and 3 gallons of bleach, 16 yards of fabric and 2 very dry hands later... the results were AMAZING. A striking skeletal pattern with teal accents that simultaneously reminds me of an x-ray and the cover of Alien 3.

Now I'm ready for round 2, which will include both a dying and weaving project. SUPER excited to get started.

People Like Art is the newest project from local designer Shannon Lea. A collection of custom printed and handmade tops and dresses that are the first in a series of themes influenced by various art forms and movements. First up is a line inspired by elementary school art and found object prints, and the next is set to come out mid November.

If you're anything like me, then reusing and recycling are important to you. Even though sometimes my kitchen gets overrun with bags of glass bottles waiting to be hauled to the recycling center and my bin looks more like a mountain, I still religiously rinse, break down, and stash. So any help getting these things to their proper destination is huge. Of course, Curby is the best known resource for households. But I recently discovered a locally operated glass recycling service called GUNNERS. They will bring you a bin to put on your porch and stop by to empty it twice a month... all for only $6 a month!
